Dr. Markus Gross, a founding member of the GEMlab, sadly passed away on January 25, 2022. His interests revolved around the numerical simulation of atmospheric and coastal flows, dynamical core development, physics-dynamics coupling and wind and ocean renewable energy.
Markus had been working for 13 years as a theoretical and computational meteorologist. He had more than 20 years of experience in scientific computation and High-Performance Computing. Before joining CICESE in 2014, he worked for five years at the UK Met Office in Dynamics Research, on dynamical core development. Before that, he did a 5-year postdoc at the Universidad de Cambridge. Markus received his PhD from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh. In 2004, he was awarded the Henry Black prize from Heriot-Watt, for outstanding performance during his PhD and PhD thesis.
Markus was an outstanding scientist and human being, well-loved by family and peers alike. He excelled at adapting to new environments despite his introverted and reserved nature ands exploited his analytical and numerical skills to make the most of new opportunities. He will live on in our memory, through his legacy, and the seeds he planted during his lifetime. He will be sorely missed.
