Vanesa Magar (PhD CMath FIMA MInstP) holds a BSc in Physics (1996) by UNAM, a MAst in Mathematics (1997), and a PhD (2001) in Fluid Mechanics by the University of Cambridge, UK. She held postdoctoral positions at the University of Cambridge, UK (2001-2002) and the University of Bangor, North Wales, UK (2002-2005). She worked at Plymouth University, UK, first as Academic Fellow (2005-2010), then as a lecturer (2010-2013) in Coastal Engineering.  She joined the Centre of Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada in January 2014 as a senior researcher, within the Physical Oceanography Department. In 2008 she began to work and collaborate with colleagues on Marine Renewable energy (MRE) projects at the University of Plymouth, where she supervised 13 MSc students in both MRE and Coastal Hydrodynamics projects. Dr Magar was also a supervisor for a total of 8 research degree students, in different roles, having been Director of Studies (first supervisor) for a total of 4 research degree students at one point during the students’ registration period. The regulations of the University of Plymouth require the Director of Studies to be a member of staff at the University, but Dr Magar remained as the second supervisor for the PhD students she was supervising when joining CICESE in 2014, up until their graduation. She had led and has participated in projects on Wind Energy (eg. OFELIA: 2013-2015, MEWA: 2018-2021),  Marine and Tidal Current Energy (eg. CEMIE-OCÉANO: 2017-2021), Wave Energy (eg. PRIMARE: 2008-2011), and Marine Spatial Planning (eg. PEGASEAS: 2012-2014). She is part of the Executive Committee of CONACYT’s  National Strategic Programme (PRONACE) on Energy Transition since 2018, and a member of the Applied Users programme of NASA’s ICESat-2 mission since 2020. She has been Academic Editor for PLOS ONE since August 2011 and reviewer editor for “Frontiers in Marine Science” since 2014. In CICESE she has been Director of Studies of three Masters Students and part of the supervisory team of 5 additional Master students until their graduation. Currently, she is part of the supervisory team of one PhD student and one Master Student in CICESE, and one Undergraduate student in the Institute of Renewable Energy of UNAM (IER-UNAM). From 2010 to 2014 she was a member of the National Environmental Research (NERC) in the UK. He is a Chartered Mathematician since 2008 and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications of the UK (IMA) since 2008, a member of the Institute of Physics  (IOP), MexSIAM and AGU. He was part of the Board of the Mexican Geophysical  Union (UGM) between 2016 and 2021 (as general secretary, vice-president, and president), and is a member of SECIHTI’s National Researchers System (level II since 2022).
